Bordeaux is the guest city in the second edition of BIA Congress. Its model of urban revitalization of the waterfront will recieve a special prize.

Bordeaux will be the guest city invited in the second edition of BIA Urban Regeneration Forum. The French capital will receive one special prize of the meeting. BIA Congress will meet in Bilbao more than 300 architects and urban planners to discuss the new urban scenarios around water. The congress will take place next July. BIA Forum 2016 recognizes the good work done in Bordeaux to regain its waterfront. A process of urban regeneration that is a reference for quality. Since 1990, Bordeaux has undergone profound urban transformation. Bordeaux is, today, one of the most attractive cities in France. The regeneration of the banks of the Garonne River was a key project. This action was supported by the Mayor Alain Juppé. Bordeaux has resolved brightly the new socio-economic context of port-city relations. The City is now integrated on the Garonne River and the river is integrated into the city. Bordeaux has regained the river frontage. Since that moment Bordeaux has undergone a remarkable process of urban transformation. The occupation of land released by the port have led to various urban proposals. There is a landscape restoration of the new reconquered margins. There are residential uses and also spaces for economic activities and collective infrastructures in the new districts. BIA Forum highlights the similarities in urban regeneration between Bilbao and Bordeaux. The two cities has been revitalized by their urban waterfronts. In the two aforementioned cases there is a metropolitan fluvial axis that divides and unites the districts on both river banks. To talk about Bordeaux and its resemblance to Bilbao’s case will participate in BIA, among other architects and...
The recovery of port cities, subject of the second edition of BIA Urban Regeneration Forum

The recovery of port cities, subject of the second edition of BIA Urban Regeneration Forum

The promoters of BIA (Bilbao Biscay Architecture) have presented the Second Edition of BIA, Urban Regeneration Forum. BIA was born with the aim of promoting architecture and urbanism in Biscay. The presentation  has taken place on World Water Day. The event will gather next July in Bilbao more than 300 architects and urban planners to share experiences about port cities around the world, and discuss about docks recovery plans, river banks and coastal areas (waterfront areas). The manifesto “New visions on waterfronts”, that BIA has unveiled, explains that the expiration of the lifetime of harbour and industrial facilities leaves strategic areas for urban redevelopment and opens new perspectives onto urban regeneration. The new vacant areas are usually large, complex and filled with conflict. The transformation of this liberated soil requires processes over decades. Long term leases, the presence of toxic waste, the need of alternative port and industrial areas lead to the need of large investments and convert these urban core areas into true challenge for urban regeneration.   The BIA2 would like to dissect the management and programming keys for the transformation of these areas of opportunity without ignoring sustainability and efficiency in the use of an essential resource such as water (treatment, reuse, banks of use…). The BIA2 proposes to discuss about diagnoses of water uses, agendas and trends in the impact of the average water availability in different urban locations The first edition of BIA 2014 was successful in activities and achievements. In this edition the city of Bilbao will host forum related events for professional architects and the public in general. An international conference, exhibitions,...

The second edition of BIA Urban Regeneration Forum is underway. This event, that will meet in Bilbao more than 300 architects and urban planners to learn experiences in port cities around the world and discuss proposals of recovering waterfronts, has launched an International Competition of ideas for urban planning and design of public space. The area of intervention is located at Elorrieta Riverside, in the city of Bilbao (Basque Country, Spain). The space to be intervened is placed between subway tracks and a river, between San Ignacio-Elorrieta district and the municipal boundary with Lutxana-Erandio. This area is currently occupied by the municipal waste management service, bus depots, industrial buildings and residential buildings (see map). Curated by architects Marta González Cavia and Jorge Cabrera, the competition is addressed to students and young architects, posed the comprehensive redevelopment of this area and its integration into the surrounding environment. Special attention should be paid to the quality of public spaces that constitute the waterfront environmental sustainability criteria. The projects must take into account the previson of a pedestrian bridge linking the area with “Punta Zorrotza”. The “Casa de Bombas”, a newly restored and declared by the Basque Government “building of cultural interest” must also be respected. The buildable space has a total area of 9,500 square meters. 70-80% is residential (720 homes) and at least another 15% will go to green areas and parks. The deadline for electronically submitting technical proposals ends on June 24. The jury will select the ten most representative ideas.
